Cristiano Ronaldo deserves a lot of credit for his post-match interview after Portugal loss
by Rob Hoskin
So, both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been knocked out of the World Cup on the very same day.
It was suggested that the two superstars were appearing in their last World Cup - a competition they are both desperate to win before they retire.
But just hours after Messi and Argentina had lost 4-3 to France, Cristiano was also on his way to the airport after his Portugal side lost 2-1 to Uruguay.
Ronaldo will be 37 when the Qatar World Cup comes around - although you certainly wouldn’t bet against him making himself available for thatHowever, this was realistically his last chance to win the biggest prize in football and he was clearly devastated at crashing out at the last-16 stage.
His frustrations got the better of him towards the end of the match and he was booked for screaming in the face of referee Cesar Arturo Ramos when a decision didn’t go Portugal’s way.
And following his self-centred post-match interview after Real Madrid won the Champions League last month, fans may have expected something similar after being eliminated from the World Cup.
After Madrid had beaten Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev, Ronaldo - who hadn’t scored in the final - appeared to take the attention away from hero Gareth Bale by suggesting he will be leaving the club this summer.
It was really unnecessary and Ronaldo deservedly got criticised for it.
But Ronaldo was definitely the ultimate sportsman on Saturday night.
He had already helped Edinson Cavani off the pitch after the two-goal hero injured his calf and Ronaldo’s post-match interview was just pure class.
